Music. I've just been listening to George Jones's "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?":

Undertaker, please drive slow;
For that body that you're hauling,
Lord I hate to see her go.

Tremendous song.

The Kinks wrote some great songs. For my part, I'd be very happy to have written "Dedicated Follower of Fashion". Speaking as someone who was in fashion back in about, oh, 1982, the song perfectly sums up my feelings regarding what's in vogue, in any field of human endeavor:

One day he's in polka dots, the next day he's in stripes.

Personally, I've always thought of the Kinks as the first in punk. Especially as they carried on, like Destroyer. As a relatively familiar band, they are, I think, vastly underrated.

(I know Destoyer was early 80s, just an example of how I always saw them)

I agree they're underrated. As for punk, well, Ray Davies married Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders. I'm listening to that group's "Message of Love" as I type.

I probably should have been more precise, John. I don't think you could call them a punk band, but, even very early on, I think I saw the seed of punk in them. And, yeah, I'm a Pretenders fan. I rediscovered Middle of the Road awhile ago, and, really, it's a good, tough, song. Not familiar with what you're listening to, but will check it out.

Never mind, John. I know that song (just not its title). Great tune, thanks for reminding me.

Yeah, hard to call The Kinks punk per se when they were recording in the 60s. But punk has seeds. I am also a fan of Iggy Pop and of The Modern Lovers.
I saw The Pretenders in concert right after Farndon and Honeyman-Scott died, and Learning to Crawl came out. They were very good.

The Stooges are wonderful. Really truly inspired moments. I watched Jarmusch's Gimme Danger about exactly a year ago (in the smallest theater I've ever been to- I think I was sitting next to a mop).

I like your mop story! It reminds me of this joke:

A skeleton walks into a bar, and asks for a pint of Guinness and a mop.

Ok, so now I'm off-topic. This really needs to be spoken, but a buddy of mine just told me this one: A guy walks into a library and says to the librarian "I'd like to order a sandwich." And she says "Sir, this is a library." So he says "Ok...I'd like to order a sandwich" (in a much quieter voice).
