From my standpoint, it was never anything but a tool of ego inflation.
And that is, alas, a temptation we will always have with us.
Although there is perhaps the possibility that it may one day become the pool where ________ can drown proudly in rules.

Robert,
I am an admirer of ruins, ie art lover, and I see your point.

Rather than leaving mystery pentimente above, I'll explain to anyone interested who didn't see it that, in essence, I objected to Jayne's assertion (she is a moderator here) that repeatedly posting this question about the Deep End is pointless. I actually enjoyed reading the responses.

Hi Rick,
I'm not offended in the least, nor did I mean to cause any offense...
I guess I got a bit grumpy over the subject coming up yet again, when the answer and the outcome remain the same.
Roger's reply was a good one, and I'm glad you agree with him.
All the best,
Jayne

I don't agree with Roger, Jayne. I see one of his points.
I agree with Anne.

In the four years that I've been here, the standards of both poetry and critique have been inarguably higher in Metrical than in the Deep End.

I think Kevin was, as we say over here, "avin' a larf". I certainly was when I replied to him.

Understood, Anne. What I agree with is your suggestion that we have one thread, Metrical Poetry.
I think it helps to look at a recent case history--Carol Taylor coming by with a poem. We ask: Why did she post in the Deep End? Did she get any closer reading or deeper critique than she would have from those who responded, all of whom are frequent and serious critics at Metrical Poetry, if she posted at Metrical Poetry? Would she have gotten more action if there were one metrical poetry tread and she brought her poem there?
I think the answers to all these questions (at least my answers to them) suggest we should sunset The Deep End.
I also think we should tighten up at Metrical, avoid the quick hits and gushing praise and actually critique even the best work we read there. We should avoid defensive responses and give our work a workout.
