Default Don't throw stones (Karel Kryl)

Stop throwing stones

So please
stop throwing stones at me,
stop throwing stones at me,
at my face.
You see
the devil’s sign on me,
haloes can’t rescue me
from disgrace,
and so won’t you please
cut the concern for me,
worthless concern for me,
for my fate.
All these
faces just glare at me,
craning their necks at me,
full of hate.

They’ll decide when it’s time,
soon they’ll be judging me,
afterwards they will run
for the striped jacket,
for my supposčd crime
they’ll be denouncing me,
so that our fragile young
will be protected.

So stop
lecturing how I must
lecturing how I must
change my track
I’ll drop,
heading home through the dust,
a horseshoe brown with rust
for good luck
for good luck
for good luck
for good luck…

Original:

Nehažte kamení

Prosím,
nehažte kamení,
nehažte kamení
na mou tvář,
nosím
ďáblovo znamení,
na čemž nic nemění
svatozář,
a proto prosím,
nechte těch ohledů,
nechte těch ohledů
bezcenných,
děsím
se vašich pohledů
přes hlavy sousedů
upřených.

Za chvíli rozsudek
hlasitě přednesou,
a potom poběží
pro sako z pruhů,
prý pro můj posudek
více mě nesnesou,
a naší mládeži
půjde to k duhu.

Spěchám,
nechte těch proslovů,
nechte těch proslovů
o scestí,
nechám
na cestě k domovu
rezavou podkovu
pro štěstí,
pro štěstí,
pro štěstí,
pro štěstí ...

Literal translation:

Don’t throw stones

Please
don’t throw stones
don’t throw stones
at my face
I wear
the devil’s sign
and nothing about it can be changed
by a halo [which a halo won’t change]
and so please
cut out those concerns
cut out those concerns
those worthless concerns
I dread
your stares
fixed over the heads
of your neighbors

In a while a judgement
they will loudly announce
and then they will run
for a jacket with stripes [prisoner’s jacket?]
supposedly for [because of] my report/dossier
they can’t stand/tolerate me any more
and our youth
will benefit [it will be beneficial for our youth]

I am hurrying
[so] cut out those speeches
cut out those speeches
about taking a wrong turn [in life]
I will leave
on my way home/on the road home
a rusty horseshoe
for luck,
for luck,
for luck,
for luck …

Notes:
Another translation of a song by the poet and protest songwriter Karel Kryl (Wikipedia article here). He used this song as the introduction to each of his broadcasts of his 14 part "Krylogy". The lyrics are more personal and direct than many of his other songs.
You can hear him singing the song HERE.

Hello, Martin. I think this reads very well, as if it were original in English. Because you are writing for music, I am concerned about "for my supposed crime". I suspect you mean "sup-PO-sed" (three syllables). The line really clunks with a two syllable "sup-POSED."

Best,

Aaron

Aaron,
thank you, absolutely; my dictionary has both pronunciations, and I want sup-PO-sed. How would you indicate the correct one--suppňsed or supposčd?

is great praise!

Thanks for reading and for your useful comment!

Hi Martin,

I don't think I've ever seen the accent marked in English other than on the -ed ending. Though that is confusing here!
I do think this is ready to be sung.

Cheers,
John

Hi John,
thank you for reading and commenting! I guess if I put the text with the music, the phrasing will be obvious.

Now I just need to find a singer!

Thanks again,
Martin

Martin, I would suggest the accent over the "ed" in "supposed." Yes, you should do a recording of your Kryl translations.

Thanks Aaron!
The problem is that I can't sing or play the guitar. I've been searching for someone who would be interested and would do a good job for several years.

Joan Baez sang one of Kryl's songs in Prague in very poor Czech some years ago; she apologized for it, but it was a success anyway. But I don't know how to get to
contact her to try to get her interested.

I'll keep trying to find someone--any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Martin

You could maybe contact Baez through her record company, mentioning her interest in him?

Cheers,
John
