Julie, you might want to reconsider "generate." Both "fabricate" and "formulate" sound too artificial for what a pomegranate does. It creates seeds. I take it that this sonnet is about frustrated sexual desire. These seeds are not destined to grow, but to be consumed to satisfy someone else's thirst. The sexual aspect of "generate" is so appropriate to this context that I don't understand why you wish to suppress it, though of course the choice is yours.

I think Susan's "generate" is good.

'cultivate' is an option, and it's also one of the literal translations of 'labrar'.

Okay, I left it alone for a few days so I could consider it more neutrally. (I always need a cooling period when I get wrapped up in the emotions of wanting to win an argument--i.e., focusing on who's right in the short term, rather than what's right in the long term.)

And today "generate" looks just fine to me.

Thanks for your patience, Martin, Michael, John, and Susan. And for standing up for the original poet, who isn't here to defend his original intention when I try to hijack it to serve my own interpretation.
