Default USA - England

Women's World Cup. 2-1, 80 minutes gone. This is a really tight game.

Cheers,
John

Update: penalty awarded.
I guess I should note that 2-1 was the final score. Second semifinal tomorrow.

A sad end for our English (I use that term in the best possible, a-political sense) friends; well-fought with some very hard breaks. But Houghton missing that kick when she was just yards outside the box with no defenders in sight — a heartbreaker. I will note also that much ink has been spilled about Morgan's tea mime after her go-ahead header, while nothing has been said about White's eye-glasses mime: as in "I caught you looking" which she did of course. But the Guardian does hate the "Pony-tail Posse."

Yes, some folks seemed happier with White's celebration than with Morgan's. It was a good game and could easily have been the final, watching it.
I'll just add Hugh Laurie's comment from Fry & Laurie: "I'm a businessman and don't have time to read a newspaper in the morning. So I read The Daily Mail."

Cheers,
John

Great line, John. Looking forward to Sunday. Neither side (The Netherlands and Sweden) look very formidable at the moment. Extra-time, nil, nil.

Yup. Sweden still love the long ball.

The US women's team evidently generate more revenue than the men but earn 38c on the men's dollar. They are suing (and nicely, the men's team support them).

Cheers,
John

And the women win championships and the men… don't even qualify. But on the subject of the Daily Mail, they had a surprise headline this morning: "Queen invites Alex Morgan to tea." Turns out it was only Brian May who said, "Because she's f'ing amazing."
