Default Tom Sawyer Imitation

I’m doing the best imitation of Tom Sawyer since my distant cousin wrote his famous novel. I have younger friends come over to play with Chucky, and they take one look at my old fashioned push-reel mower, and they say, “Oh cool, I’ve never used one. Can I try it out?” Then they mow my lawn. It’s worked with my brother Jimmy, with Danny Mahli, and today with Stevie Syrdal. I’ve already paid for this very expensive little contraption with volunteer labor. Steve set a new standard today. We had a lot of rain last week, so he first mowed east to west, then remowed north to south, a perfect checkerboard.

These are very athletic guys whose grandfathers used such a machine.

When I bought the machine, the kid in the hardware store asked, "Mr. Murphy, at your age, do you think this is a good idea?"

If you were truly Tom Sawyer you would have charged them for the privilege of mowing your lawn.

Actually, Roger, with my red hair and freckles, I'm Huckleberry Finn.

Tim, am I misremembering? I thought there was no particular physical description of HF in Twain's books... I always picture TS as being red-haried and freckled, but that's because he was played by Johnny Whittaker in the TV version I saw as a child...

I think that's right, Simon. Twain doesn't describe Huck's features, only his clothing. Huck does get a crush on a red-haired girl, and Twain still doesn't bother telling us his own hair was also red. But I'm still willing to let Tim be Huck if he wants to.

Tim, I'm looking forward to your next volume of dialectical verse.

Shaun, you're really young, and you should try out this nifty little mower! You and Chucky can share the big bedroom, and I'll sleep on the couch.

This thread is closed, as it is nearly five years old and we have a current one running, for news of Tim, and for his friends to post their good wishes.
