Take solace in that our nadir has been reached. We have sunk to the unfathomable depths of our undoing as a nation of liberty and justice — For now.
All will come home to roost. Get out the vote.

Thank you Adam Schiff, Nancy Pelosi and the others who argued so valiantly and with good conscience. Conscience, both good and bad, never dies. Things will come home to roost.

I don't think this is a time to take solace or to assume that any outcome is ordained.

What will happen is what people make happen, and the American Right has proven willing to work hard toward outcomes that would have been unthinkable a short while ago. Voter suppression and the wielding of minority power are far more open and shameless than in the recent past.

Democracy can be coopted to entrench leaders who aren't in any practical way answerable to the people they're supposed to serve. See Hungary. We're moving in that direction, and the fact that we see it is no guarantee that it will be stopped.

This is a dangerous time for our democracy.

Max: "I don't think this is a time to take solace or to assume that any outcome is ordained."

Ralph seemed to be intimating that the outcome (of this chapter anyway) is all but a foregone conclusion — I'm afraid that much is inevitable. We'll know for sure, I believe, by midnight or noon tomorrow.

As for this being an appropriate time to take solace, "solace" is not exactly right. It is more a respite from the hellish events that continue to cascade... A time to step back from the torrent and catch a breath. Then back out into the sunlight. I do think this is something like a nadir point that will give way to a subtle awakening of the electorate that could help defeat Trump in 2020. The electoral college, on the other hand, is a strange beast. We must know how to use it to defeat him.

And no, nothing is ordained. Yet, anything is possible in this best of all possible worlds. Hmmmmmmmm... Yes vote vote vote vote.

Maybe, Jim, Max is appropriately angry and alarmed. This didn't start with Merrick Garland, but it was an indication of how extreme that fucking party will go. We are at war, let's not cheese this over. Unfortunately, the American electorate are too spoiled, insular, and uneducated to be allowed to choose kitchen tile.

added: It's voter turnout. America is probably sickest when people don't vote. In Taiwan, we just had a 74 percent turnout, roundly rejecting Beijing.

There is an excellent candidate in Sanders standing against most of what feeds all this. He is the one with the army willing to go head to head here. Support the movement behind him. Go where the people are ready to risk as much on peace and justice as these jackasses have risked on war and corruption.I don't see a DNC insider taking these pigs down. There is a reason the younger members of the house like Cortez and Tlaib made their choice. Fighters recognize fighters.

Not that the whole game is federal or that the saviours are top down. But he is a mensch with good people around him.

And buy a gun. And learn how to use it. The one thing that emboldens the naturally cowardly fascists waiting in the wings is the delusion that only they are armed. Check out Scott Crow on community self defense. Good fellow.

In a way, Andrew and I have cross posted. He has already suggested one answer to my question. I look forward to others.

Given the fact that minority rule is so firmly entrenched and shameless, I wonder whether the normal avenues of democracy--voting, getting out the vote, donating to and volunteering in campaigns--are sufficient.

We the majority keep bringing democracy to this knife fight and we keep losing, to the detriment of the country and many of its citizens.

I feel we need to do more. I'm not sure what.

Boycotting Facebook, which many of us spend our time enriching, and which not only refuses to take a stand for honesty in political advertising put appears to be actively supporting Trump, is my only idea so far.

What else can we do? I hope you smart folks have ideas.
