Autumn Sky Poetry Daily
After a long hiatus, Autumn Sky Poetry Daily is publishing a poem a day again. It publishes both formal and free verse. My "Plague Song" is up there today:

Well done, Susan. Congrats! I'm not quite sure who or what the vultures symbolize, but the image definitely enhances the ominous tone. By the way, not long ago I was taking a walk through a nearby suburban neighborhood and came upon a turkey vulture eating something from a lawn. When it saw me, it flew up into a tree. That was the first time I ever saw one in my town.

Martin, the vultures are a sort of visual reminder of the presence of death, but they also, like humans, have to eat to stay alive, so perhaps life in the midst of death.

Thanks for explaining it, Susan. Yes, "life in the midst of death" is an apt way to say it!
PS - I just came across this page called "Bird Meaning Vulture." I'm in the process of reading it. So far it's pretty fascinating. You may find it interesting, too.
