Hi John- I'm not in a condition to respond responsibly (and am grateful, more than ever, for spell check). At a party, and am way past go (I live in Taipei). I love the the voices you listed, particularly Ian Curtis and Nina Simone. I was thinking of writers who might be more distinct in this regard. But that's beyond the scope of the thread (again). Generally, I don't see much hope these days musically or lyrically. I think Jonny Greenwood and Julian Casablancas should get together perhaps...

Hi James,
There's not too much I love of what I know coming out these days. The Arctic Monkeys' first album has a unique (Sheffield) voice, and there was Amy Winehouse. I agree with you about Ian Curtis and Nina Simone. Hope you had a good party, one day my wife and I will make it to Taipei.
Cheers,
John

Taipei's great, John. It had to learn to deal with diversity a long time ago, so it's a comfortable place to live. Of course the Portuguese were here hundreds of years ago, but even among the Taiwanese, there have been people living here from very different cultural backgrounds (people from different parts of China, as well as 13 or 14 different aboriginal groups, for example).

Interesting! My wife and I tend to go to Kazakhstan when we're in Asia, but we'd like to travel more.

My girlfriend hates the work of Jim Croce', she says he is nothing more than a poor woman's James Taylor. I tell her she lacks the sensitivity to appreciate it.
I Got a Name
Like the pine trees lining the winding road
I got a name, I got a name
Like the singing bird and the croaking toad
I got a name, I got a name
And I carry it with me like my daddy did
But I'm living the dream that he kept hid
Moving me down the highway, rolling me down the highway
Moving ahead so life won't pass me by
Like the north wind whistlin' down the sky
I've got a song, I've got a song
Like the whippoorwill and the baby's cry
I've got a song, I've got a song
And I carry it with me and I sing it loud
If it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud
Moving me down the highway, rolling me down the highway
Moving ahead so life won't pass me by
And I'm gonna go there free
Like the fool I am and I'll always be
I've got a dream, I've got a dream
They can change their minds but they can't change me
I've got a dream, I've got a dream
Oh, I know I could share it if you'd want me to
If you're goin' my way, I'll go with you
Movin' me down the highway, rollin' me down the highway
Movin' ahead so life won't pass me by
Movin' me down the highway, rollin' me down the highway
Movin' ahead so life won't pass me by
