I did not, Orwn. Actually Craig Raine should take the credit for the Bolo verses. He got them from Valerie Eliot. She was not amused when they turned up in the book. I could not obtain Auden's 'The Platonic Blow' though I went to the British Museum for it. Sophie was more fortunate. I was told it was poor stuff, but it isn't. Very Auden indeed!

I bought a copy on ebay last night for $4.00 postpaid. (Thanks, Martin ... I did not know of its existance before I read this thread). It will make good midwinter reading.

By the way, a limerick by Cosmo Monkhouse appears in Louis Untermeyer's 1946 anthology "A Treasury of Laughter". I bought this yesterday afternoon at the local Goodwill, and was up half the night browsing through it.

I've just received my copy too, and it is indeed hugely entertaining. I'd never come across variations like limicks or limeraikus before, but I daresay I shall waste this weekend experimenting with them.

Default The ARTICHOKE

In Genesis, as a flippant joke,
The Lord created the artichoke;
With armor plates of glaucous green,
It’s the worst darned joke I’ve ever seen.

A part of the thistle family,
The ’choke holds no appeal to me;
When thoroughly, it's boiled or steamed,
By gourmets it is well esteemed.

Like savages, they rip apart
The armor plate from tender heart;
A lot of energy is spent
For mighty paltry nourishment.

A waste of time to eat; alas
It’s cherished by the leisure class.
With taste approximating phlegm,
I like to think the ’choke’s on them.

The Pengiun Book of Limericks arrived in my mailbox yesterday, and it is welcome reading to allieve what has become a long spell of crappy winter weather.

I got involved in replenishing my dwindling firewood supply last week, and clean forgot about the deadline on this comp. Oh well, it might have some recycling potential in a future comp ...
