Gene Auprey, who was active on the Non-Metrical board during my years of active Sphere membership, and who served as an editor at Soundzine, has passed away. (My thanks to Charles Musser, who posted about Gene's death on Facebook today and talked about their long working relationship in poetry.)

I was not familiar with Gene or his poetry. The article in the Portland Herald touches me deeply.

The synopsis of his life outlined in the article describes a remarkable man with a remarkable outlook on death. I am especially moved by the excerpted lines from a poem of his that brings the article to a close:

“I will not defy death nor will I accept it by default; Though pain is excruciating tonight, it is neither harbinger nor is it assassin but rather reaper of that which has withered on the stalk.”
