Their new writers award competition was open to poems of all types, and I placed as a runner-up with three ornately formal poems (two of which were heterometrical sonnets). I think the assumption that they wouldn't normally accept such poems is plainly false.

This isn't to convince you to submit to them (or not), but let's not baselessly attribute nefarious motives where none exist.

I sent them mostly formal poems in October, and while they didn't take them they sent me a very kind, personal note encouraging more.

Where do they get $6.35 as a submission fee? I'd be okay with an amount roughly equal to what it would cost in stamps (including SASE), envelopes and paper, since that is a cost traditionally borne by the submitter, but this seems to veer off into the for-profit zone. I don't know what Submittable charges them to use their system, but I'm pretty sure it's not that high.

Poets need to make up their own minds about whether any journal is a good venue for them to submit to. I think it helps to know facts such as the size of the submission fee ($6.35) and the low rate of acceptance (.44%). I also urge people thinking of submitting there to read the published poems posted on the journal's web site. A journal can be open to some kinds of writing in form and not to others. If I decide that a journal is not a good fit for me, it doesn't mean it won't be a good fit for you.

Susan
