What Andrew says - and much of it can apply over here!

One of those men that you do not care about, that all of you are demonizing here -- he just died.

Perhaps you might observe a respectful moment of silence, before dancing on his grave.

I think that post is a little unfair, Jennifer. No personal reference was intended to Tim Murphy, who I did not know, but who was personally kind to me when few people here seemed to be open to a poem in Scots. I had no idea that he could be said to match the opinions referenced on this thread - but, fair do, I should butt out of what is a US area of concern. However, if I have offended - with absolutely no intetntion of doing so - I apologise, and in full.

Oh, believe me, Nigel -- compared to the emails and messages which I am receiving over the course this thread has taken, I am being far too kind.

I am sincerely grateful for your reply. Peace to you. Be well.

Jennifer

One thing that most Republicans, Democrats, and third party/independent voters agree upon is that the Electoral College is not functioning as intended and needs to be changed.

The good news is that the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which improves that situation without altering the U.S. Constitution itself, is still inching along toward taking effect.

If you live in (or have friends in) a state that hasn't yet signed on, please read up on this compact, and help to encourage more state legislatures to sign on before 2020:

Very interesting, Julie. It looks like unilateral disarmament by small states. It is hard enough for us to influence presidential elections as it is. Why would we give up the significant subsidy that including senators in the elector count gives us? We have 8 CDs, add two senators gives us a 25% boost. Montana has 1 CD, it gets a 200% boost from the senators! If Cal. has 55 CDs, the senators only add 4%. It's a pitiful bulwark against domination of one state by another, but we have so few. I suppose the senate, which exercises huge power with no regard to the relative proportionality of state populations, offends the principle of numerical equality for more on a daily basis than the quadrennial election of the president by the EC, which at least combines the numbers of house reps and senators.

I think the President should be elected by popular vote. Especially now, when gerrymandering and voter suppression have skewed results so far to the right. I do think both parties are guilty of gerrymandering, but, really, the right has taken that to the next level. Wait for the midterms when republican held states try, again, to limit voting access in certain areas. There's gonna be problems.
