Wow, that is a lot of echoes. Though the Celan is riveting on the page. I like the Rose Auslšnder as well - including the English translation nicely rendering goldner as Goldner. There's a range of good German poetry from the first half of the C20th, beyond Rilke, whom I compare to Yeats. I've just picked up bilingual editions of Trakl - The Last Gold of Expired Stars - and Benn - Impromptus, and am looking forward to them.

Tony, sorry to send you down a rabbit hole, but it was darn fun, wasn't it?

And many thanks for the Portuguese. I can't with any honesty compare it with the German, but it has an element that the English translation doesn't. (But that's another conversation, isn't it?)

I have a number of questions about your poem, but I might ask them privately. (Unless you want me to put my ignorance on display!)

Yes, it is an interesting time and esthetic. Trakl is one of my faves (I got turned onto him because James Wright loved him). He shows that you can have a narrative lyric that is filled with amazing, surreal images, and instead of confusing the narrative it makes it sublime, dreamlike and exciting.

Check this out:

Kevin, pm or email me!

Best, Tony

Hi Tony,

And thank you for posting the Trakl twenty poems. They are resonant and still in these English translations: quite lovely. I have a tribute to James Wright that I'll be posting sometime soon.
