Cuttlefish
is a dish
some will consume with gusto.
I will only eat it just so.

Upon one leg, the heron
is staring
into the pond for fish.
They are its dearest wish.

The flamingo
of Saint Domingo
is not a rara avis.
Such is the world God gave us.

A tortoise
stuck in a mortise
is disappointed
not to be double-jointed.

A scallop
can't gallop
but compared to a horse, when it comes to dinner,
a scallop's the winner.

An okapi
is more than happy
with only half
the neck of a giraffe.

A camel
in a trammel
is as grumpy
as he's humpy.

A male red-breasted nuthatch
simply can't match
the bird of paradise for feathers.
But you will find him in all weathers.

A leopard
would kill a shepherd
and so it may correctly be asserted
that leopards can't be herded.

The mastodon
is dead and gone
but fossils confirm
it was a pachyderm.

Dr Spooner
Would have agreed, none sooner,
That trying to herd leopards would be asinine,
But shoving them is fine.
