Howdy:

I know a lot of Sphereans have submitted poems to (and been accepted by) The Dark Horse. What kind of response time do you typically get from them on submissions? Any other current outlets you find to be particularly fast or slow?

I don't know what Dark Horse averages, but I had some poems there this past year for 8 or 9 months. I eventually withdrew them, as someone else was requesting them. Actually, I still have a poem languishing there a good year on, though I hesitate to ask about it as I think I may have caused offense...

The Dark Horse website says "please allow up to twenty weeks before hearing from us", which gives poets an idea of how to plan submissions. The UK mag which stands out re response times is Smiths Knoll - often days rather than months. I don't know how accurate the stats on http://www.jefferybahr.com/Publications/RptSubTimes.asp are.

I had two poems accepted by the American editor, who sent them on to the UK for a final reply, which was negative. The whole exercise from submission to rejection was about three months, I think.

I've twice submitted poems to the American Editor in the last two years, and both times I got a response in only 5 to 6 weeks - which isn't bad, considering my experience elsewhere. However, both were rejections.

I've tried The Dark Horse twice and got the rejections within one to two months. I sent the poems to the American editor.

My experience has been good with Jennifer Goodrich, the American Editor, but quite poor with Gerry Cambridge. When I submitted to Jennifer, she accepted and passed a few on to Gerry within a few months - and they then festered in Scotland for a much longer time before eventually being rejected. Direct submissions to Gerry Cambridge seem to sit for at least six months.

Steve, have you seen Jeff Bahr's database? We should probably send him some additional data.

I think I waited around nine months to hear back from The Dark Horse.

The quickest rejection I ever got was from the Hudson Review. I submitted some poems for their New Writers issue, and got them back about three days later.

I've received notes from Ms. Goodrich saying she was sending them on to the UK as well; Mr. Cambridge replied quite quickly recently, within a few months of my sending to JG. Unfortunately they were rejections, but he sent a kind note that makes me feel I may yet write (or send) something amenable to his taste.

Hi, Guys:

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I use Jeff Bahr's database a lot. I didn't see Dark Horse on there, so I thought I should ask here. I generally find that his database is in the general ballpark for most of the magazines, especially those with good sample size. One I've found to be somewhat innacurate is the entry for Smartish Pace, which usually responds faster in my experience.

Fast responding magazines:
32 Poems
National Poetry Review
Cincinnati Review
Poetry

Slow:
Hudson Review
Nebraska Review (Though Alicia seems to have had a much better experience with them under their new management)
Fine Madness
California Quarterly
