Thanks, and ditto!

I thought I'd be the only American here today. We're goofing off this year and ordering Chinese food.

Hey, I have to do something while the bread rises and the pumpkin pie bakes, and it's too early to start the turkey breast and the veggies.

Happy T-day to all!

I'm here, too... home from a day of WORK in this nation that does not celebrate Thanksgiving. Who won/will win the televised football games? (You know, in the States, I wouldn't even be curious, but as an expat...)

I always liked Thanksgiving when overseas, no pressure, we went out to dinner. In Italy it was always "where" to go.

Not cooking today, but we are having lasagna.

My first Thanksgiving as a vegetarian! I became one for ethical not health reasons--decided I'd rather love animals than love to eat them. But I love meat!! So it's gonna be hard not to have that turkey with stuffing and gravy, etc., etc. Arrgghh! We're going to try "tofurky"! Pray for me.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Well, I had soup for Thanksgiving dinner, along with a glass of red wine. Man, am I living!

Marion, interested readers are curious as to whether tofurky tastes like

a) an old boot
b) a fashionable high-heeled shoe
c) the tailpipe of a '58 Ford pick-up truck
d) Grandpa's cremated ashes

Happy Thanksgiving! Even after 35 years up here in Canada (where Thanksgiving is on Columbus Day!) I still consider today the REAL Thanksgiving!

Marion,

Welcome to the vegetarian world! We are near-vegan (Is anyone who doesn't grow her own food truly vegan? Even some organic produce farmers kill garden pests instead of repelling them); our community makes it difficult to be vegan, and though I use non-animal rennet, organic cheeses, I look forward to when I can buy cheese substitutes that do not taste like melted hairbrush handles. Or I could give up cheese, but that would be very, very difficult.

Anyway, we are having fruit salad, rolls, cranberry-orange relish, sweet potato/pecan casserole, asparagus with toasted pine nuts, apple crumble with a frozen soy topping, and an Italian merlot. Almost vegan--you have to go all the way to New Orleans to buy vegan wine, and then the selection isn't too great.

If you want to move more in the vegan direction, there are very good sour cream substitutes available, and I use soy milk in every recipe that requires milk.

And for meat-eaters, there are plenty of free-range, non-factory farm turkeys, etc. available that were not tortured prior to their (careful) slaughter.
