Allright, I'll behave, but you can't catch me, I'm much too little. I am like a yellow seed in the sieve. Catch me if you can! I'm so quick.

Wendy -
Your post made my day. I've started to sing The Battle Hymn of the Republic. Can't wait.

Not all moderators will dive into the pool of rovers, (is that a mixed metaphor, or what?) but most of us were roving already, posting and commenting to other forums. Although we may have areas of particular interest or expertise, being assigned to a forum is like having a second full-time job.
A roving staff will help us make sure there are always enough mods to go around, and we won't have to feel guilty when the other world calls us away from our duty stations. In the past some mods have given up the job or taken leaves of absence because they couldn't continue to commit the time it demands, and one of the main hurdles in recruiting new top-level talent to the staff has always been the time conflict issue.
So here we go a'roving into the Eratosphere... is that a mixed metaphor, or what?

At first I thought, Oh no! Raving moderators! Then I read the title of this thread more closely.
It should be noted that "rave" comes from the Middle English raven, which comes from the Old North French raver, a variant of resver: to dream, wander, rave.*
But "rove" comes from the Middle English roven: to shoot arrows at a mark.*

I want to be a roving mod when I grow up---and I'll even work for free!
It's pretty pathetic when you check "Who's online" and you're the only one!

Didn't Dylan use a roving moderator in Highway 61 Revisited?
Well, the Roving Moderator said, "Good Lord,
Would you look who's currently browsing my board?
Let's post a critique that reads, 'Hey, Fool,
Come on, come here, get back in the pool!
You know that West Chester's all completed and done,
And we've got these forums we're supposed to run -
But when I check who's on line, I'm the only one!'"
