This is the competition in this week's Spectator. You still have the opportunity to win it by sending something in by email. £25 to be won. I'm having a bash with this one below. I expect one of you can do better
No. 2566: Paracrostic
You are invited to submit a poem (16 lines maximum) in which the initial letters of each line, read down the page, reproduce the first. Entries to ‘Competition 2566’ by 9 October or email lucy@spectator.co.uk.
The Wizards of Oz
The Wizards of Oz,
How wholly together,
Especially because,
Whatever the weather,
In rain or in shine, so
Zesty and bright, so
Attracted to wine, so
Red and so white, so
Delightfully witty,
So cute and so clever,
Outstandingly pretty,
For ever and ever.
Onwards, Australians!
Zap all the aliens!

I don't think there's any point in an address because you won't get it there in time. The only way is to send by email and the email address is there. John

What a shame-- I was hoping for something to read. The thought of entering never entered my mind.

A Valentine
As you read this little poem,
Valentine, recall
All the times you made me feel
Love could conquer all.
Endings come. We’ll see those days
no more. Still I can’t quell
the feeling that I have for you
inside. So listen well:
No more, dear Valentine--I’ve had
enough! Go rot in hell!
My Cat
My cat dreams he’s hunting, while asleep like a log,
yet the fearless feline, when out on the prowl,
can’t catch a rodent, a fish or a fowl;
at the sight of a cat he lets out a growl;
though the only one he scares is the dog.

The pigeons in the square
Have reproduced with zeal,
Excreting everywhere.
Peace symbols leave their seal
In Rorschach blots of white.
Gigantic paintings lie
Exposed in broad daylight,
Open to the sky.
New layers grow each day,
Surprising morning eyes.
In vain the cleaners spray —
Nature wins the prize.
The action painters splash,
Hurl, drizzle, drop and drip,
Expecting lots of cash
Since what they paint is hip.
Queer how our eyes deceive.
Upstairs a Pollock draws
Art lovers, who believe
Realism bores —
Except for the naive.
------
Damn, it's too long!

Oh Janet, and you've blown your chance of twenty-five quid. But Marion, you must enter your Valentine. It's a winner. What could you do with twenty-five pounds?

Trying again...
Sarah Palin
At the mike
Recites the lines her coaches wrote.
Adorable! What's not to like?
Her cuteness keeps McCain afloat.
Perhaps she'll win, become VP,
And jump through one last poodle-hoop,
Living proof it pays to be an
Incoherent
Nincompoop.

Democracy
Evades the masses,
Mostly it’s for middle classes.
Often aristocracy
Controls it through bureaucracy.
Radicals of every hue
Attempt to carry out a coup.
Class warfare and hypocrisy—
You can’t deny you do that too.
