The world's biggest and most lucrative formal-friendly contest is "The Formal Olympics" (my label, not theirs). The indefatigible Dr. Alfred Dorn has just announced the winners of 21 contests and awarded $5,000 in prizes. The contests tend to be very specific as to form and content (so get back to our exercise room to practice!) and exceptionally competitive. For next year's guidelines, contact Dr. Dorn at World Order Of Narrative and Formalist Poets, PO Box 580174, Station A, Flushing NY 11358-0174. There are no entry fees (except an affirmation you are a subscriber to The Formalist) and it runs annually (more or less).
As one would expect, Erato rocked. OUR Len Krisak was this year's biggest winner with four firsts, three seconds and a bunch of thirds and honorable mentions. OUR Jennifer Reeser edged out OUR Rhina Espaillat for a first in the Innovative Form contest. Rhina, OUR Gail White and OUR Deborah Warren also won various awards.
Sorry, Len, if I miscounted and sorry if I left anyone out. Oh, and newbies who learned of the contest here, please send the standard 15% of your winnings directly to Alex.
