RIVER POETS was formed in late 1991, and currently meets as a workshop at the Newburyport Public Library in Newburyport, MA on the second Saturday of each
month, from ten in the morning until about one
. We now have fourteen members; several have published one or more books, as well as individual poems in magazines and anthologies, and a number have won national and
international awards for their work.

In addition to the workshop, since January 1995 we have also been running a monthly reading series one Wednesday evening each month, at the Newburyport Art Association. That series presents featured readers, often celebrated, widely published poets, as well as an Open Mic reading for poets in the audience who sign in as they enter. Our readings are free
and open to the public; they begin at 7:30 p.m., and end at about 9 p.m.

The PRP coordinates, but does not adjudicate, The Newburyport Art Association Annual Spring Poetry Contest, which has been in operation since 1995, is judged by a different well-known poet each year, and awards cash prizes as well as certificates to three winners and a number of Honorable Mentions. This year's contest drew almost 600 entries from twenty-nine states and Australia, and was judged by Diana Der-Hovanessian, President of the New England Poetry Club.
