First he refused to save himself by truck,
Saying that God would rescue him in time.
He trusted Him as some men trust their luck,
He said, and watched the rising water climb
His porch steps, as his neighbors drove away.
Next he declined the safety of a boat
That drew up beside his attic window bay.
His faith, he said, would help him keep afloat.
At last, as he was standing on his roof,
A chopper hovered close and dropped a ladder.
He shouted, “Jesus saves!” and waved it off.
Drowned and in heaven, when he asked the Lord
Why he was sent no savior, he was told,
“I sent the truck, the boat, the helicopter .   .   .”
