Able Muse is pleased to announce the winners of the Write Prize for poetry & fiction (judged anonymously throughout by the Able Muse Contest Committee and the final judges, Jill Alexander Essbaum [4] for fiction, and Annie Finch [5] for poetry). The winning writer and the winning poet will each receive a $500 prize.
Write Prize (for Fiction), Final Judge: Jill Alexander Essbaum [4]Here is what Jill Alexander Essbaum has to say about Leslie Jill Patterson's winning story:
"Target," is a compelling, relevant story. On one level it's a study in quietly placed wistfulness, placing the reader in its center. The author creates a space that facilitates an experience of empathy. On another level, it's a profound exposé of why we make the choices we make, and how, in the face of consequence we are able—when we are able—to make peace with these choices.
The winning story will be published in the Winter 2017 [6] issue of Able Muse, print edition. (No other entry in the fiction category achieved selection for publication.)

Write Prize (for Poetry), Final Judge: Annie Finch [5]Here is what Annie Finch has to say about D. R. Goodman's winning poem:
“Fall Rewinding” navigates edges: fall and winter, past and present, forward and back, whimsy and seriousness, outer and inner landscape. The poem’s imagery and thought interpenetrate its physical pattern so that it’s hard to imagine it taking any other shape; the sonnet becomes a necessary vehicle for exploration. Does the first stanza actually reverse the flow of meaning— the way the leaves reverse the flow of time—only to surrender again during the second stanza? This attentive, compelling, and mysterious work of poetry invites such possibilities, changing and evolving on repeated readings, to become ours as well.
FINALISTS:
Scott Ruescher - "The Orchard"
Ann M. Thompson - "The Bath"
Rob Wright - "She asked if I could talk about my past"
- The winning, finalists' poems will be published in the Winter 2017 [6] issue of Able Muse, print edition.
