Sleeping Dogs
Pile high their pillows, toss
the books from their chairs,
spread cotton blankets on
the chesterfield, re-carpet the stair.
Unplug the phone, the radios,
cram them in a drawer;
net the bright spring birds, poison
the rabbit and squirrel.
Draw the front room curtains close
and let no suitor knock the door;
leave their silent muzzles drowse
a cool and moonless floor.
