Carrying Capacity
Someone’s been eating
the day lilies and
everyone blames you,
but instead of getting
mad, I imagine what
it must be like to be
that bright bloom
yielding to your
soft lips, gently bruised and
nuzzled down to stems.
Or the speckled fawn
you nurse and softly stash
under the magnolia
for the day, or by night
the damp sod your hooves
burn into heart shapes.
What do you have to say
for yourselves?
I leave the brightest
of apples for you.
