Azores: Poems

Like a voyage to the Portuguese islands of the title, the poems in Azores arrive at their striking and hard-won destinations over the often-treacherous waters of experience—a man mourns the fact that he cannot not mourn, a father warns his daughter about harsh contingency, an unnamed visitor violently disrupts a quiet domestic scene. The ever-present and uncomfortable realities of envy, lust, and mortality haunt the book from poem to poem.

The Hidden Model (Triquarterly Books)

From the huddling men in a Rembrandt print to an image in a bathroom mirror that might be Christ or a mere smudge, David Yezzi, with his precisely carved and subtly cutting language, questions and considers the surfaces of our perceptions and the life they conceal-that which suggests, asks, demands to be seen.

Corridors

Corridors is a collection of visually refreshing, and literary accomplished poems. Samantha Le, in her debut effort, exhibits a vibrant confidence, alluding to a poetic preoccupation of the fist order. The poems are self-referential but compassionate, objective but personal. The prose is reminiscent of Paz’s Agulia y Sol, Dario’s Azul, and Rimbaud’s Illuminations in its tendency to expose the poetic and mystical side of intersubjective human experiences. The work, as a whole, forms a loose narrative of coming-of-age poetry.

Little Sister Left Behind

This novel is a fictional memoir of a family's struggles through post-war Vietnam and their journey in search of a better life on foreign soil. It is the story of wounded pride, as personified by Father, silent resentment, as depicted by the conventional Mother, and the fragility of innocence, as embodied by our young heroine. The novel takes us from the private struggles of familial bonds to the public crumbling of old traditions. This novel tells the universal tales of all immigrants in the United States through the eyes of a young girl.

Fault

In Fault, Katharine Coles continues to explore her abiding interest in the intersections of science, culture, and history, but the book is perhaps best described as an extended meditation on love.   Ranging across time and continents, Coles addresses such figures as Newton, Kepler, and Vesalius, not only with intellectual rigor but also with a humor, intimacy, and buoyant optimism that render her subjects—the figures and the science—accessible within the capacious intellectual, emotional, and physical landscapes of the poems.
