Another Woman Who Looks Like Me

It is Lyn Lifshin's gift to seem perfectly artless, to make poems of immediacy and power from the humblest of near-to-hand materials. In this, her third collection to be published by Black Sparrow, her themes are those of classic lyric poetry -- the innocence of childhood, the ecstasy of lovemaking, the mystery of death -- and her word choices are the poetic equivalents of the artist's circles, squares, and primary colors.

The Licorice Daughter: My Year with Ruffian

"Thoroughbred racing has never gotten over Ruffian. Lyn Lifshin came out of nowhere to become a Ruffian fan, a zealot for everything Ruffian stood for and all that she touched. Her poems will carry you away to a field of Kentucky foals, to the racetrack where each new horse could be the one, to the bone-numbing feeling of a runaway winner and to the despair of watching brilliance flame out. Ruffian would have liked Lifshin."-Sean Clancy, author of Saratoga Days

Nutley Pond

In Nutley Pond, Lyn Lifshin takes us through shifting seasons at the water's edge. She moves from winter in the ebony cove to spring when geese honk the sun back into summer with its wind of white rose petals and white clouds of doves into fall with its ruby oaks and the coming blue sack of cold. Her introduction talks of the beauties and terrors of living so close to the pond and of the thrill of finding one of the original geese in the magnificent Operation Migration that taught motherless geese to follow a an ultra-lite air craft.
