Met Mr. Cassity a number of times in Los Angeles. A small, thin and carefully-spoken man, who, according to the friend and fellow librarian he had traveled to meet, intentionally wore his button-down collars too large--and he wore ties always. Recall James Merrill (they were about the same height) looking more at Mr. Cassity's collar than his eyes as they discussed "The Changing Light . . . " A gentleman with manners of the kind then and now seen but rarely, with a tart tongue that carried nicely in his work.
