 Of Tim Murphy, Espaillat writes:

Tim’s poems, teeming with crops and hunting dogs, blood, manure, weapons, and prey, reflect a life so radically different from mine that they sometimes feel like invitations to the other side of the moon. The poet himself and I differed on so many issues—social, political, economic, religious—that our long, deep friendship seems, in retrospect, an unlikely miracle.
But miracle it was, and a happy one I am more grateful for than I can say, for the warmth and sweetness it brought so unexpectedly into my life. Tim enlarged the spiritual circle in which I live, think, and feel; and taught me—arguments and all—much about the nature of friendship, and the forgiving tenacity of human love.
