Memphis Fall

October comes without a leaf
turned, green from river bluffs
to suburbs oozing east,
magnolia blooms’

pale, transitory flesh as fierce
in holding on against
the day’s diminishing
as ours, as sure

to fail.  A momentary stay
and wind will rise, night fall
across the cobblestones,
the mannered lawns

of cul-de-sacs, on parking lots
and malls, fall equally
on columned porticos
and concrete steps,

playgrounds and cemetery rows
where homeless sleep
beneath magnolia scented
evening air.
