It Will Never Be Beautiful

It will never be beautiful—the scar’s
grim mouth sewn silent. I’m certain even
the mirror has grown weary of it, part
knife-wound, part miracle. I imagine
the surgeons as they work: how intimate
their actions, tending the unforgiving
skin, honoring the body’s resilient
structure, its universe within—cutting
apart what must be made whole. No suture
promises certainty, but the surgeons
understand just how capricious nature
is, see the singleness of each moment,
see how time, not hope, is truly fragile—
how the scar will always be beautiful.
