I’ve come across the nations and the seas,
beloved brother, to stand upon your grave,
to bring to you, at last, these gifts for the dead,
softly speaking, in vain, to your silent ashes.
The Fates have taken you away from me,
too soon, too premature, too unexpected.
Nevertheless, please accept these gifts,
in the tradition of our beloved forefathers,
as my tears rise again in my eyes and swell:
Goodbye, brother, forever—Hail and farewell!
