Three Loves in Autumn
Three Loves in Autumn
Vermont’s hillsides are clad in maples,
farmsteads in Chapman’s apples,
cheddar and milk are staples,
and September sunshine dapples
yellow and russet maples.
Wind curries Dakota grasses
like flowing manes, and it amazes
the tourist who briskly passes
a tall shelterbelt that blazes
briefly above the grasses.
Golden aspens on a mountain slope
illumine the Front Range.
In deep dream I often grope
to understand how change
is requisite to hope.
