Solitude

      You’ve tried to nail a board
      to waves, whisper an ode
      to jackhammers, and goad
      a gut to strum a chord.

      You even tossed a string
      up to the sky at night
      to try and catch a kite.

      Now it is time to bring
      yourself back, yeast to flour;
      unfold a face you put
      once in a chest, your foot
      pressed flat against the hour.

      If, added, one makes two,
      its quotient must be you.
