Years ago, Set the Ploughshare Deep arrived at my doorstep, buried in a box of books to consider for review. I saw immediately that this was something that people should know about: spare, almost laconic poems about the lives and landscape of the high plains, leavened with allusions to what seemed like the entirety of poetry in English (and a fair amount in Latin), crafted in meticulous, sonorous formal verse.
