The Hunt Theme
‡
Our themed art exhibit for this issue is The Hunt, reflecting the issue’s special tribute to Tim Murphy, for whom hunting was a favorite activity—evidenced in the abundance of poems on this subject matter in his body of work. A fine example of Tim’s work on this theme is “The Chase,” a poem in three sections from Hunter’s Log. The poem’s epigraph is a quote from Plato’s The Republic, and the reason is apparent in the last stanza of the first section of the poem, “I. November 24,” where the poet demonstrates how much he’s in accord with the philosopher’s belief that hunting is the purest form of human happiness:
-
I bear our trophy to the truck in bliss,
the proud retriever frisking at my knees.
Glaucon hunting with Socrates
could hardly have been happier than this.
