The Mountain Lion of Central Park

 

      Edward Kemeys’s Sculpture “Still Hunt”

      He crouches on a ledge above East Drive;
      Ivy half hides him from potential prey.
      Though attributes that helped his forbears thrive
      Don’t suit the wildernesses of today,
      Readers and sunbathers on nearby lawns
      And joggers slowing to a winded trudge
      Up Cedar Hill are lucky that he’s bronze
      And, while appearing ravenous, can’t budge.

      A self-sufficient, old-school predator,
      Straightforward in his . . .
