Bluebeard blamed his parents,
         Dracula the state.
Procrustes wept when he saw the slides
Of his houseguests’ hands and feet.

Scylla and Charybdis
         Went public with their plight.
If they’d grown up in better homes
They would have turned out right.

The Sirens formed a help group
         To support each other’s grief.
They all had been molested.
         They were good girls underneath.

And Chronos, eating children,
         Paused to wipe his chin.
Nobody ever told him
         Infanticide’s a sin.

No monster is responsible
         For his enormity.
Under the house, the crawl space holds
         A repressed memory.
