If it should ever happen that I learn
That you have died—learn second- or third-hand,
Perhaps, from someone who did not discern,
Or could not even hope to understand
Just why my hand shook more in aftershock
Than normal from his more-than-manly grip
(Such news comes every hour of the clock
To someone, surely); should he let it slip
That someone somewhere heard of an obit
Some small-town paper set in agate print;
I think I would just smile and joke at it—
How weak I’d let myself become. I’d hint
I needed to start up at our old gym.
At least I think that’s what I’d say to him.
