The Old Flames Rise Up from the Ashes

Bumper polished to a high sheen, he gazes
into it, his own distorted image
entertainment for hours on end. Amazed
maybe at the rim of sunset orange
around his beady eyes, or the startled
“V” of his tongue. The parts of himself,
he can’t see without a reflection—head,
neck. Silly goose. Famous physicists deft
at analyzing form and function have been
stumped by less, the war of Heisenberg & Bohr,
who was evil, who was good—science mixed
with politics, the beauty of a mushroom
cloud. All I know is, fat as that goose seems,
his bones are hollow as an airplane’s wing.
