In Bed With Auden

Watched by every human love,
My brown cat lies down to sleep.
She can have her choice of beds:
Fresh clean laundry in a heap,

Books that I’m about to read,
Keyboards where my hands are set,
Cupboards left an inch ajar.
Not one need will go unmet

In her small enchanted world.
With one squeak, the water’s changed
And the liver or the fish
Are most tastefully arranged.

Tiny mistress, may you rest
Long on every shoe or glove.
On the cushion of your choice
Lay your sleeping head, my love.
