Hey Matt,

It suddenly occurred to me that something about your basement voice reminds me of the later Pink Floyd of 'Animals' and 'The Wall': the Orwellian use of animals as grotesque representatives of authority figures, the anger, the sympathy for the marginalised, the focus on mental health, the very Englishness of it all. I thought of these two song lyrics, both from The Wall:

In the Flesh

So ya
Thought ya
Might like to
Go to the show.
To feel that warm thrill of confusion,
That space cadet glow.
I've got some bad news for you sunshine,
Pink isn't well, he stayed back at the hotel
And they sent us along as a surrogate band
We're gonna find out where you fans really stand.

Are there any queers in the theater tonight?
Get them up against the wall!
There's one in the spotlight, he don't look right to me,
Get him up against the wall!
That one looks Jewish!
And that one's a coon!
Who let all of this riff-raff into the room?
There's one smoking a joint,
And another with spots!
If I had my way,
I'd have all of you shot!

Outside the Wall

All alone, or in twos
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall
Some hand in hand
Some gathered together in bands
The bleeding hearts and the artists
Make their stand
And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall
after all it's not easy
banging your heart
against some mad buggers Wall.

I like this, in context, as much as the other Basements you've posted. They're pretty unique I think. I can imagine them with Gerald Scarfe illustrations!

David, Fliss & Mark,

Thanks for your comments.

David, you may be right that I've overdone the "whats". I didn't originally use them with the N, only the villain/official. I don't make the Ernie Wise connection; a little before my time. I was thinking more cockney/estuary underworld kind of thing: cops and villains. I thought it went with "grass". More Vinnie Jones than Ernie Wise

Fliss, thanks for coming back. Yes, that slug sex scene has been seared on my brain for many years. Kind of cathartic to finally write it down.

Mark, I'm glad it works for you in the context of the series. That's all it needs to do, I guess. And thanks for the Pink Floyd connection.

thanks again all,

Matt
