The 6000 page TLAOBL will arrive on our desks with a resounding thunk next week. Alan's 2900 and Tim's 280 lines of the Beowulf lead off the volume. The tome is $74, although Volume I, the Middle Ages, can be had for $34. Sphereans may wish to wait for March 2003, when the stand-alone high school and college text will be out for $13. Meanwhile, you can read a few excerpts and listen to me recite in both languages at Alan's website, www.crucat.com.

No, Jim, it's easy for me to pop slim volumes of verse into a bubble mailer, but this honker should be ordered from Amazon. I should mention that there is a companion CD to the Anthology, available at the same page on Amazon, which features yrs truly.

Tim, could you repost the link to crucats.com -- I tried typing it into my browser, but all I got was an error message.

I am SO HUMILIATED! Never could type in a URL. But seriously folks, this is the triumph of the EfH. When Wilbur and Davis and Hecht all told me to finish the job, Alan learned Anglo Saxon, worked 11 hours a day for 11 months, and gave us not Beowulf's Greatest Hits (my ambition), but the entire epic. My schoolboy memory was that it was a flawed poem, brilliant passages interspersed with meaningless, flaccid digressions. Having EDITED Alan, I now realize that's not the case; and if the English peoples have a great epic, it's this one, not Milton's. It is a thrill to know that millions of kids will be reading our version and that little David is going up against the Goliath of the Heaneywulf.

I had the great good fortune to read early galleys of Tim and Alan's Beowulf, and I found it splendid. One of my few accomplishments in a language other than modern English is having read the thing several times in Anglo-Saxon, and I've also read a number of translations. This one should be the standard for a long time.

I can't imagine better luck than to come back to the Sphere after weeks away and hear Tim read this breath-takingly beautiful poem. Tim, we're in your debt.

Hi Tim,
The first link worked for me. I listened to your Old English reading and thought it very cool, ominous and noble sounding. Enjoyed it, thanks.

Congratulations, Tim and Alan!
The excerpts on Alan's website are so good that I pre-ordered volume I of the new Longman Anthology a couple weeks ago, just to get the Beowulf. (We'll see whether Barnes and Noble, where I ordered it, delivers it as fast as Amazon, if any of you are ordering it there.)
Based on the parts I've read, it seems to far surpass the two other translations I'm familiar with. But I'll refrain from saying more until I've read the whole thing!
