Bob Crawford wins Nemerov
I received word from Bill Baer that Robert Crawford won the 2011 Howard Nemerov Sonnet Award for "Odds Are." This is his second Nemerov, if my math is right.

The Sphere rocks and rules! I'm sure somebody outside the Sphere has won a Nemerov or two, but I can't remember.

Big congratulations to Bob Crawford! And also to finalists Stephen Scaer (an apparently modest fellow) and Peter Bloxsom! I don't recognize other Sphereans on the list, but I may be wrong:
2011 Finalists:
David Berman
Peter Bloxsom
Marta Rijn Finch
Carol Frith
Juliana Gray
Daniel J. Langton
Laura Maffei
Catherine Moran
Joanna K. Pearson
Stephen Scaer
M. Kathleen Walworth
All hail the new Nemerovians!
Best,
Jean L

Way to go
Wow, another two-time winner from the sphere. Way to go.
For those interested, Bob also has a very good sonnet in the current issue of First Things.

Congratulations, I look forward to reading these!
Just to share a personal anecdote, my mother is a contemporary of Howard Nemerov, and went to school with him in NYC (Ethical Culture). I pressed her once for any memories, and all she would say was, "Howard was a very nice boy. And he played football."

Congratulations to Bob, Peter, and Stephen! The Nemerov winners and finalists are always worth a read. I look forward to seeing them in Measure later.

Hooray for Bob! The Nemerov is on top of a Wilbur last year, which I think gives him an Indiana Hat Trick, or an Evansville Slam, or something like that. It is is, by the way, Bob Crawford's second Nemerov - he won for The Empty Chair in 2006. And, in my role as Official Bragger, I have to mention that it's the ninth Nemerov won by a Powow River Poet - three by Mike Juster, two each for Bob and Rhina, plus Deborah Warren and Stephen Scaer (basically, everybody but me.) And congrats to this year's other Powow finalists, Stephen Scaer and David Berman.

Huge congratulations to Robert and the Erato finalists, Peter and Stephen. It is such a delight for me to see Peter, my unmet down under friend and poetry journal collaborator, in this list of finalists! Go Peter! He told me when choosing to take a hiatus from being the editor and technological wizard behind several fine poetry journals, that he wanted more time to write. I am so glad he found it! He's given so much of his talents to all of us.
