A forehead glistens in a band of light

Downstairs, a hallway clock is pulsing hard
To amplify the sense of keeping guard
Against the thing that might strike any time,
As midnight's throbbing doom begins to chime.

The bedmate is a guiltless, unlit shape,
Whose presence further serves to block escape,
While that caught face, whose sinking heart I share,
Burns isolately in the light-drained air.

A forehead glistens in a band of light.
