— A painting by Corot
A pink light spirals into bluish trees.
The road turns at a bluff. A rider rides
Toward open sunshine at the curve and sees
What we cannot yet see. At the roadsides
Masses of brush glow in a mottled blend
Of earthy tones. A woman gathers wood.
A mother, child in arms, speaks to a friend
Perhaps of family matters understood
Between them, or of confidences kept
Which, when we pause there, we may come to know.
Approaching, we are happy to accept
The invitation offered by Corot
To join all those who, through the years, have been
Asked to look closely, then to enter in.
