Oh dearest poet lariat,
my verse is weak and fairly flat.
I've smacked it with a baseball bat;
it just gets worse, a sat-on hat.
Am I correct to post it here
with poets on Eratosphere?
Believe me, I am not their peer;
is doggerel their greatest fear?
Are gags and slapstick things to shun?
My verse tends to the two-thirds pun.
But corny jokes are just more fun
than sonnets on the setting sun.
Is clowning something poets frown
at as they strive for charming sound?
D’you think they’ll chase me out of town
or will they pat this baying hound?
