Copyrights and permissions
Does anyone here have experience in dealing with copyright stuff for quoting from books in a book of your own?
For sources that are still under copyright, I know there’s the “fair use” rule, for which I’ve seen a ballpark figure of 1,000 words from a book--less, obviously, from an article--as quotable without having to request rights (and pay for them) from the publisher.
I’m curious as to what other people here know about this, and also, how much does it usually cost to get rights to quote more than the fair use amount? I’m talking about quoting from scholarly stuff, not best sellers.
