Default Poetry Review, UK, and Stinging Fly, Ireland: Congrats to All!

Received contributor's copy of Poetry Review from the UK--Wendy Videlock, Michael Hulse, Angela France, Adam Elgar and I have new poems in it. Another contributor's copy arrived today from Ireland: Stinging Fly, in which Quincy Lehr and I share honors with two poems. Kudos to everyone!

And Poetry Review will be having a launch as well, in London--no can go transatlantic for it, unfortunately, though I would have loved to say yes to the invitation! George Szirtes is the editor of this issue, and I see a number of poems about money so far. More relevance for everyone!

Event Details
Date: Saturday 30 June
Time: 2pm
Venue: The Clore Ballroom, Royal Festival Hall, South Bank Centre, London SE1 8XX

Entry is free.

Huge congrats to you and everyone who published in Poetry Review, and to you and Quincy for the Stinging Fly publication.

I got excited because I thought I would be in London on the day of the party (got the month wrong). I won't be there until July 25. Rats!

Charlotte

Congrats, all, that's a prestigious venue and Szirtes a distinguished editor. I looked at the contents online and saw also that there's a review of Katy Evans-Bush in that issue. And I'm intrigued that there's a poem about spider monkeys by Signor Elgar.

That's very, very impressive! Many congratulations to all involved, and thanks, Terese, for posting about it.

Don't know if it's still true, but I've a note saying that they get 60,000 poems/year and print 120 - i.e. 1 in 500.

Well done, all of you. This Poetry Review guest editorship is good: things were getting fusty in that magazine, and now the windows and doors seem to have been thrown open. Having said that, last year they printed Alan Jenkins' 'Four Students' (nod to Hardy), which is one of the best poems I have ever read. Tim: 1 in 500 sounds about right: at New Walk we print less than 1%, and Poetry Review are one of the four or five 'biggest' poetry magazines in Britain. But one sensed previously that some people had significantly lowered odds and some significantly heightened ones, and that has changed, as different editors now get a chance to put their individual stamp on the thing.

Charlotte, perfectly understandable case of jumping to a happy conclusion!

Andrew, yes, I should have mentioned the review of Katy's Egg Printing Explained, which is quite positive. Here's a quotation from it: "History repeatedly forces itself on the present, as in 'You're in Bedlam'...An American childhood of 'cicada-scream/ summers so bright the leaves were only glare' is evoked here and elsewhere in wistful, cinematic detail."

Thanks to all of you for the good wishes! There is so much original and unsettling (in a good way) work in both these journals. They're exceptional.

Thanks, everyone - wonderful poems by Wendy, Terese and Angela. Great for my little squib to be alongside them.

Fiona Sampson (who accepted mine before leaving PR) told me that she was getting 17,000 subs a year. I don't know who does the counting!
