Alfred Dorn
Quincy Lear has posted on FB that Alfred Dorn has died. He was great in encouraging many Eratosphere members with his contests. No details.

I am so sorry to hear this. Alfred has been part of my literary landscape as long as I can remember, and was a friend to formal poetry long before it was fashionable. As the Orthodox say - Memory Eternal!

Thinking of Alfred Dorn
For some reason, just a few days ago, Alfred Dorn popped into my head and I wondered if he was still with us. It's sad to hear that he's died. Like many of us, I admired his poems and found him to be a kind and gentle man. I still see that picture in my head of him standing in a cape in front of what looked like a stuffed lion.

I am sorry to hear that he has died. He did his best to encourage formalists at a time when few were doing so. I remember him from the first West Chester conference I attended, when he sat in on a workshop taught by Rhina Espaillat.

He was a unique and special guy. I you ever tried the annual contest he promoted, with its wealth of categories, it was particularly difficult to forget him

Alfred Dorn - More Information
Adding to Sam's notice -- Carolyn Raphael has asked me to pass
on the below brief obituary and funeral etc. information. I have warm memories of Dr. Dorn and his limitless enthusiasm for poetry and poets; certainly many others do too:
Poet and scholar Dr. Alfred Dorn died on January 1st, 2014.
Former Vice President of the Poetry Society of America, and
author of several volumes of poetry, Dr. Dorn was widely
published in poetry journals and was the recipient of numerous
awards. He was most generous with his time and support, never
refusing a request to comment on a colleague's poetry or to attend
a reading. His devotion to his craft was an inspiration to his
students, and other poets.
There will be visiting hours on Friday, January 10th, beginning at
5 p.m. at Harden Funeral Home, 208-17 Northern Blvd., Bayside.
The funeral service will begin at the Harden Funeral Home on
Saturday, January 11th at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by a
graveside service and burial at the Flushing Cemetery.
Most people are going to the Harden Funeral Home on Friday, at 5 p.m., when people will be reading eulogies and remembrances.
Condolences can be sent to Dr. Dorn's stepson:

This is sad news. Dr. Dorn often attended and read at the I & T readings at the Bistro on Carmine Street as well as WCU. He had a unique style of humor and always had generous words for the other poets he enjoyed. He was a charming man and I was sorry to hear he was ailing later, eight or nine years ago, and more recently as well. My deep condolences to all who knew him and especially to his good friends.
